So often we praise those who are considered go-getters.

Their initiative, drive and ambition is impressive and we aspire to be like them.

Terms like “take no prisoners” and “don’t let anyone stand in your way” come to mind as we try to get the most out life.

We want more money, more status, more recognition and we want it now.

Books are written about the subject and we buy them, hoping to find the secret to getting more.

But is that all there is to life?

When I went to the United Kingdom about six years ago, I found myself captivated by some of the magnificent cathedrals that we saw.

Canterbury, Westminster, York.  They are phenomenal buildings, especially considering the eras in which they were built.

One of the things that amazed me about these great cathedrals was that the architects and designers who came up with the plans and vision, very rarely saw the final product due to the length of time that it took to build their creations.

Importantly, they knew that this would be the case, but instead of simplifying their designs so that they could see their project in its final state, they designed the most extravagant tributes to God that they could imagine, knowing that their masterpieces would live on well beyond their own time on earth.

What a wonderful legacy to leave.

What have you got to give away for free?

It’s a question that I’ve been asking myself more and more recently. 

You see, the world has changed and the more that people begin to give away, the more opportunities present to make a meaningful contribution to those around them.

Often the question that people ask is, “How much can I make from this?”

A better question is, “How much will it cost to give away?”

Chances are the answer is nothing, so try giving one of these things away.

A young lady was waiting for her flight in the boarding room of a big airport. As she would need to wait for a long time, she decided to buy a book to read and a packet of cookies to snack on.  She sat down in an armchair in the VIP room of the airport to relax and read in peace.

A man sat down in the next seat, opened his magazine and started reading.  When she took out the first cookie, the man took one also.  She felt irritated but said nothing.  She just thought: “What a nerve! If I was in the mood I would punch him for daring!”

Generosity is a wonderful trait to have and is one that I really admire when I see it in action.

I am fortunate to have numerous people in my life who are genuinely generous in many different ways and they are constantly influencing me to look for ways to be more generous.
