As a father of three kids, I’ve read more than my fair share of Dr Suess books over the years.

Born Theodor Geisel, he is a great example of persistence, having been rejected by over 20 publishers before finally getting his break as a book writer.  He went on to sell over 600 million books!

The wonderful rhythm and rhyme of his books makes them a fantastic tool for teaching children the basics of reading, but in addition to his quirky stories there are some fantastic quotes for us adults as well.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from Dr Suess: Read the rest of this entry »

The remarkable Maya Angelou

The remarkable Maya Angelou

This week, we lost a truly remarkable woman.

Maya Angelou was a wonderful poet, writer, activist and singer.  Her singing and speaking voice had such richness and she shared such wisdom that I could listen to her for hours.

She didn’t have an easy upbringing, but over her 86 years, Maya was able to forgive, love and create wonderful art.  And while she did so, she encouraged us all to forgive, love and create wonderful art as well.

When I read her writing, I feel incredibly inadequate as a writer, but her charming, wise words continue to inspire me to get better at my craft and here are a few of my favourite quotes from this brilliant and extraordinarily talented woman: Read the rest of this entry »

Clive Staples Lewis is one of my favourite authors and has been since my dad read his classic, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” to my sister and I on a family holiday over 30 years ago.

A noted academic at Oxford and Cambridge, he had a brilliant intellect and the ability to tell compelling, thought-provoking stories that still capture the imagination, much like his good friend, J.R.R. Tolkien, who was largely responsible for converting C.S Lewis to Christianity.  His faith was an extremely influential part of his writing, resulting in Christian classics such as “Mere Christianity” and  “The Screwtape Letters.”

There are hundreds of quotes that I could have chosen, but I have kept this list to just 10 in the hope that you will add your favourite at the bottom as well if you have one.

Anyway, here are my favourite C.S. Lewis quotes: Read the rest of this entry »

As someone who believes in the importance of passion when pursuing goals, I was very excited when I was recently asked to speak about the subject by an old friend for his leadership team.

In my mind, being passionate about your work is crucial to delivering great outcomes and your success in any area is often commensurate to how enthusiastic you are.

As a part of my preparation, I found some great quotes and I wanted to share my 9 favourites here.  I hope that they help you to get excited about life and encourage you to live a life of passion:

Sir Alex Ferguson

No Sir Alex, we applaud you! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

As a long-time Manchester United supporter, I was surprised and saddened this week when Sir Alex Ferguson suddenly announced his retirement from management at the tender age of 71.

Whilst, I have supported Manchester United since before Sir Alex took over as manager 26 years ago, all of my memories of the great club have involved him at the helm.

His medal tally is extraordinary and will probably never be matched in top-flight football at one club, including:

  • 13 Premier League titles
  • 10 Community Shields
  • 5 FA Cups
  • 4 League Cups
  • 2 European Cups

True his Glasgow origins, Sir Alex was never shy about giving his opinion and has given us some great quotes over the years on a wide range of subjects.

Some are withering statements about his opponents that don’t quite match the encouraging, uplifting essence of this blog, but there are a few great insights that I would like to share with you today.

One of the common themes of this blog is encouraging people to take action.

It’s all very well to have dreams, aspirations and positive attitudes, but it’s insufficient if you don’t do something that will take your closer to realising your goals.

I need constant reminders on the subject myself, so I’ve compiled this series of quotes to inspire me to do more.  I hope that you are similarly inspired.

Here are my 10 favourite quotes on the subject of action:

In my reading over the past couple of years, I keep stumbling across the name Rumi, often attached to a particularly insightful quote, but until recently, I had no idea who he was.

Jalal ad-Din Rumi was a 13th century Persian Muslim poet and Sufi mystic.  Born in what is now known as Tajikistan, his influence ranged from Turkey to India during his lifetime.  Remarkably, his writings have had a recent renaissance and in 2007 he was voted the most popular poet in America.

So, here are my top 10 favourite quotes that I’ve found.  I hope you like them:

English: Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, Gaute...

Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on 13 May 1998 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Nelson Mandela is widely regarded as one of the most inspirational people in the world from the last few decades.

From his time as a political prisoner during South Africa’s apartheid regime, to his period as a remarkable president and statesman, he constantly displayed quiet strength, the rare ability to forgive his enemies and incredible wisdom.

He has sadly passed away at the age of 95, but his quotes continue to have an impact around the world.

Here are eight of my favourites:

Fear of failure is one of the most restricting phobias we can have.

I once had a boss who would often say, “Failure is not an option.”

He was wrong.

Failure is a very real option and an underestimated one.

Being afraid of failure limits our capacity to take risks, try new things and learn from our mistakes.

As I considered this, I came across a few quotes that make this point better than I can, so here are a few brilliant quotes about failure:

Muhammad Ali knocking out Sonny Liston

Universally recognised as one of the most iconic athletes of all time, Muhammad Ali dominated the sport of boxing, both in the ring and in the headlines, throughout his illustrious career.

Ali was a magnificent boxer, but he is also renowned for some of the clever quotes that he used.

Lines like, “I am the greatest,” and “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” are among some of the better known statements of his, but he also had some more profound comments that I find both inspirational and thought-provoking.

Here are some of my favourites quotes from Muhammad Ali:
