Over the past week, two of my staff have celebrated birthdays.

As we all work remotely at the moment, we have had to sing “Happy Birthday” via Teams.

To put it mildly, it wasn’t great.

To be more accurate, it was awful.

We sang in three different keys.

Some were belting it out at a furious pace, and some were treating it as a funeral dirge.

Even the hip, hip hoorays seemed clunky at the end.

But it was still wonderful.

Because in the midst of a lack of face to face interaction, it was an opportunity to make a human connection.

To let the people we care about, know that we are willing to look (and sound) silly.

It gave us something to laugh about together and in the future.

We need to keep looking for opportunities like this.
