Pastor Rick Godwin recently said, “Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.”

What wise words.

So often, those who criticise are those we listen to the most.

They’re the voices that we replay over and over again in our heads.

We wonder how we could have pleased them.

We want to argue and defend ourselves.

We fixate on their ill-placed words, allowing them fester inside us.

But let’s be more careful and judicious about who we accept criticism from.

That negative person who only complains.  Don’t listen to him.

That faceless troll posting from his parents’ basement.  Don’t listen to him.

That smarmy colleague, who has never achieved anything herself.  Certainly don’t listen to her.

But every now and then, we need to know what we are doing wrong and could do better.

None of us are perfect (I know I’m not) and we occasionally need a wise head to help us to get back on track.

So listen to the sage whom you are happy to get advice from.

Someone who has been there.

Someone who cares about your progress.

Someone who is credible and careful with their words.

Everyone else?  Don’t accept it.
