There’s a scene in Lawrence of Arabia where one man puts out a match with his fingers, and doesn’t flinch.

Another man watching tries to do the same, and yells in pain.

“It damn well hurts! What’s the trick then?” he asks.

“The trick is not minding that it hurts,” the first man says.

Sometimes we look at the achievements of others and think that they are impervious to pain.

They seem to have an insatiable work ethic and the ability to delay gratification that the rest of us don’t have.

Or maybe, they don’t mind that it hurts.

And they do it anyway.
