Cut the Blue WireWe’ve all seen the action movies when the hero is trying dismantle a bomb.

The clock ticks down ominously while the hero hovers with a pair of clippers, wondering what to do next.

Do I cut the red wire, or the blue wire?

Blue or red?

Red or blue?

While perspiration drips from the hero’s forehead, the clock continues to count down.

10, 9, 8, 7…

Here’s the dilemma.

Do nothing?

Everyone blows up.

Cut a wire, any wire?

50% chance of success.

Inevitably, a wire is cut and everyone sighs with relief when the clock stops.

Alternatively, the wrong wire is cut and the hero runs for cover and miraculously escapes injury as the explosion takes place spectacularly in the background.

What about your life?

We all have difficult decisions to make sometimes regarding our careers, our finances, our relationships, our health and other important matters.

What should you do?

You could ignore the problem, and do nothing.

Or not know what to do, and do nothing.

Or suspect that you know what you should do, but because you aren’t 100% sure, do nothing.

But we all know what happens next.

Tick, tick, tick.  Boom!

Alternatively, you could cut the blue wire.

You could make a choice and do something.

Of course, there are no guarantees that it will work.

But at least you give yourself a chance.

And at the risk of diluting the metaphor, if you take action and it doesn’t work, the consequences are rarely as dramatic as you imagine.
