Dont-be-afraid-to-lookThe lion looked to the heavens and prayed, “Dear God, help me to become the fiercest hunter on the savannah so that I can catch my dinner today.”

The giraffe looked the heavens and prayed, “Dear God, help me to reach high for the juiciest leaves on the tree.”

The penguin looked to the heavens and prayed, “Dear God, help me to swim with the speed and grace required to catch a bellyful of fish.”

Your-job-for-life-isThere was a time when a young person would finish school, start a job in a particular industry (most likely the same one as dad’s) and work there for life.

The same factory, the same office, the same commute and the same boss, until the age of 65 when they would be given a hand shake, a gold watch and then waltz off to retirement.

But times have changed.

Companies downsize, businesses go bust, industries evolve, robots replace people and employees are much more likely to voluntarily change jobs for better pay or more suitable conditions.

So, is there such a thing as a job for life any more?

You-cant-go-on-a-greatYou can’t pick a rose without risking being pricked by its thorns.

But a rose is still worth the risk.

You can’t get honey without risking being stung by bees.

But the honey is still worth it.

You can’t taste victory without risking the disappointment of losing.

But the contest is still worth it. Read the rest of this entry »

The Greatest TragedyIn the past couple of days, the world lost a giant of a man when preacher and motivational speaker Dr Myles Munroe was tragically killed in a plane crash in his native Bahamas.

He was an extraordinary individual who dedicated his life to inspiring people to maximise their God-given gifts and live their best lives.

One of his best known quotes was:

It could be an unexpected health issue, legal complications or the irresponsible actions of someone beyond your control.

I hope that you are never in this type of situation, but there may come a time in your life when you hit rock bottom.

How should you respond?

Here are five options to choose from: Read the rest of this entry »

The-quality-of-peoplesExcellence is hard.

It takes a lot of work and practice to become outstanding at anything.

It takes years of focus and discipline.

It means that you will need to make difficult sacrifices.

It leaves you open to criticism from those who don’t understand.

And you will need to stretch yourself and grow far beyond your current capabilities.

Are-you-looking-for-theWe all want to be an overnight success.

Sometimes, when I’m dreamy and delusional, I allow myself to go to a place where all of my aspirations come true in a moment, as if a fairy godmother (or Oprah) magically grant my wishes.

But of course, it doesn’t happen like that.

Success comes inexorably.

Theres-no-point-inA good friend (thanks Simon) recently shared with me a story about legendary (and slightly eccentric) Hall-of-Fame baseballer Rickey Henderson.

It seems as though Rickey had always wanted to be a millionaire, so when he received a bonus cheque for a million dollars from the Oakland A’s, instead of cashing it, he had it framed and put on his wall to display for all to see.

It wasn’t until he received a phone call from the slightly flustered A’s finance department, who suggested that he display a photocopy, that he went to the bank and cashed the cheque.

One tree can start a forest;

One smile can begin a friendship;

One hand can lift a soul;

One word can frame a goal;

One candle can wipe out darkness;

One laugh can conquer gloom; Read the rest of this entry »
