In Mark chapter 9, there is a story of a father who has asked Jesus to heal his son.
Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
There are times when I can relate to this man more than any other character in the Bible. I have a strong faith, but it doesn’t come without questions or doubts.
This is my prayer when I feel like this:
I do believe that our business will sustain our family for many years, Lord help me overcome my unbelief during the quiet weeks.
I do believe that You will use me for great things, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I fall short of my full potential.
I do believe that I will make a lasting positive difference in the world, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I don’t have the impact that I’m looking for.
I do believe that my kids will turn out great, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I don’t parent them as well as I should.
I do believe that you have a plan for my life, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I wander around aimlessly.
I do believe that you are a God of miracles, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I am in need of one.
I do believe that you are near, Lord help me overcome my unbelief when I am not aware of Your presence.
Amen.
