Every child deserves the freedom that my kids have.

Every child deserves the freedom that my kids have.

Every child needs to be able to play freely.

They deserve the right to laugh, frolic and dance.

They should to be able to optimistically use their imagination, without wondering what is on the other side of the fence that contains them.

No child should live in detention centres.

Every child needs access to a great education.

They deserve to be able learn, grow and flourish in a safe and supportive environment.

They should be able to dream of a future where they get to utilise their unique skills doing something magnificent, without wondering if they will ever be free.

No child should live in detention centres.

Every child needs to be able to feel healthy and happy.

They deserve access to caring services that have their best interests at heart.

They should be able to feel loved and valued, without having their fragile spirits crushed by an oppressive system that takes away their hope, their joy and their freedom.

No child should live in detention centres.

Every child (and their parents) should be able to leave a war-torn nation and seek asylum in a safe place that welcomes them with open arms, gives them hope and empowers them to make a valued and positive contribution to their new home.

No child should live in detention centres.

For my non-Australian friends, at present there are over 1,000 children who have legally sought asylum in Australia currently held in offshore detention centres.  They are treated as numbers, not people, and live in camps in atrocious conditions.  These are innocent victims of a cruel and unfair system that past and present governments have put in place.

To save our soul as a nation, this must stop.

Offshore processing sounds like something we do to meat, not to children.

We can, and must do better.  There are far more compassionate and less expensive alternative responses to this and it’s time that our major parties (and Australian voters) did something about it.

I can see a time in the future when a leader of this nation will apologise to the victims of  this horrible system, realising that it is a diabolical breach of our duty of care to people who desperate and vulnerable.

No child should live in detention centres.

And while they are letting the kids free, let’s do the same with the adults as well!

If you agree with this and are as passionate and heart-broken about this as I am, please feel free to share this post with your friends.
