Passion is a crucial ingredient to success in any field and if you can find out what you’re most enthusiastic about, you can often turn those passions into a fantastic career or business idea.

For me personally, I remember when I was working in the telecommunications industry.  I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the industry, but I was successful in my role because it gave me an opportunity to focus on developing the people around me.

It was the coaching and development side of the role that got me excited then and they are the reasons why I love my business and this blog.

As I reflect on my own passions and think about all of the enthusiastic people I’ve been fortunate to meet, here are the top 10 signs that you’re passionate about something:

  1. You wake up in the middle of the night and can’t sleep because you have another exciting idea on the subject.
  2. You want to learn everything you can about the subject, reading books and blogs to increase your expertise and get the latest news.
  3. You don’t need anyone else to motivate you to do it.
  4. You’ll always find (or make) the time to do it.
  5. You can’t wait to hear about the latest trend, product or expert in the field.
  6. You get lost in your work and time flies when you are occupied in this area.
  7. Your heart speeds up and you get more animated when you talk about it.
  8. You can’t understand why others aren’t as excited about the subject and you may have a tendency to bore people about the subject.
  9. You often spend time with people who are interested in the same subject.
  10. No amount of set-backs or obstacles will stop you from pushing forward with your plans in the area.

If you smiled and could relate to this list as you read through it, my guess is that you know what you’re passionate about.

However, there is one important caveat that comes with a list like this.

Francis Chan once said, “Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.”

I suspect that the same could be said of our passions.

I’m passionate about the sporting teams that I support, and can say yes to most of the above list when it comes to my enthusiasm for my teams, but in the end, that’s not what’s important.

Be passionate and find a way to operate in your areas of passion, but make sure that you are spending your valuable life excited about something that matters and makes the world a better place.
