It seems that wherever we look there is a lot of competition.
If you’re in business, there will be a lot of others selling the same product or offering the same type of service.
If you’re looking for work, there will be potentially hundreds of others applying for the same job.
If you’re writing a blog, I can almost guarantee that there will be thousands of others writing about the same subject.
But there’s one market that’s never crowded.
Excellence!
If you want to stand out from the rest of the competition, set a phenomenal standard and become elite at what you do.
You will stand alone.
People will notice.
The effort will be worth it.
If you can deliver excellence, it will be never be crowded!

Wow. I just stumbled across your post … and it made me cry. When I was interviewed for my first writing job, I laid the truth out on the table. “What I can’t deliver in quantity, I will definitely make up for in quality.” They took a chance on me and I kept my word. I probably wrote one story for everyone else’s five. But the response to my stories … well, people certainly appreciated excellence.
Now I’ve decided to do something I’ve been longing for and preparing for ever since I was 12–to write a book. But just like you said, the market is jammed. Everybody and their brother (as well as their hairdressers, babysitters and next-door-neighbors) are all writing books. And some of the stuff getting published … well, so much of it just seems like drivel. So what will make mine stand out or be any different? What will make it not get lost in the shuffle?
And I got overwhelmed and discouraged because I didn’t know.
But you just unexpectedly answered those questions for me–and it made me cry. Excellence. You reminded me that excellence is what will make it stand out. Excellence is what will make it different. And maybe it will take me ten years to do it and maybe it will be the only one I ever write. But it will be excellent. That is the only thing I can promise.
And that’s enough.
