So, how do your kids spell love?

T.I.M.E.

You can buy them great presents, go on terrific holidays, give them all of the opportunities in the world, but in my opinion, the most effective way to show your kids that you love them is to spend time with them.

Children crave and need the attention of their parents.

When they don’t get it, they act out.

When they do get it, they feel like they’re the most important person in the world, which is exactly how our kids should feel.

And when you’re with them, be with them.  No distractions, no calls from work, no TV in the background, no other priorities, just you and your children.

Play their games, read their books, take an interest in their world.

Some people believe in quality time with their children.  That is, booking in a block of time on a fortnightly or monthly basis to spend time with each child.

I suspect that this isn’t enough.

There’s no such thing as quality time, there’s just time!

They want to know that you want to spend time with them more than spend time in the office, on the golf course or down at the pub.

David O. McKay once said that, “No amount of success can compensate for failure in the home.”

I know it’s not always easy and this is as much a message for me as it is any other parent, but I believe it’s an important message.

What about you?

Do you spend as much time with your kids as you should?

Can they tell that they are loved by how you prioritise your time?

Do you need to make some changes in this area?
