Crocodiles are one of the most successful predators on the planet.

Sitting at the apex of the food chain, they are massive beasts that have a tried and true method of hunting that has remained consistent for thousands of years.

They are one of my oldest son’s favourite animals and we have watched numerous documentaries and read books together, giving me the chance to identify a few principles that I think we can learn from these iconic reptiles.  They all start with the letter P, making them easier to remember:

Positioning – Crocodiles are ambush predators.  They have the ability to predict where their prey are going to be, either through knowledge of where they drink, where they have to cross a river or where the tides flow, directing large volumes of fish to them.  This understanding enables them to be well positioned at the right time, increasing their opportunity to be successful.

Are you well positioned for success?

Have you done all that you can to prepare yourself for what you want out of life?

If you want to go to the next level in your career, have you developed your skills, built your reputation and carefully created a network of people who can assist you?

If you want more fulfilling relationships, are you approachable, generous and pleasant to be around?

If you want a breakthrough in your faith, do you pray, fast and read your bible on a regular basis?

Patience – When crocodiles have positioned themselves, they wait patiently.  They know that they may have to wait for their prey to come to them and are prepared to bide their time until the opportunity presents itself.

What about you?

Are your expectations realistic?

Do you get impatient when opportunities don’t come immediately, or do you understand that you may need to wait for the right job, the right opportunity or the right time?

We live in a world that wants everything yesterday, but there are times when patience is required.

Pounce – After crocodiles have positioned themselves and waited patiently, they have to take advantage of the opportunity to pounce when the time comes.  They launch themselves with all that they have and grab their chance.

Are you ready to pounce?

When your time comes, will you be ready?

Or do you hesitate and watch while the opportunity that you’ve been waiting for walks in the other direction?

Life rewards action.  There’s no point in preparing yourself for the next level if don’t have the confidence and initiative to go for it.

What can we learn from crocodiles?

To position ourselves, to be patient and to pounce when the time is right.
