As this is a blog written from a life coaching perspective, it’s only natural that I write a lot about goals.

Developing goals, writing them down, making sure that they’re ambitious, yet still achievable.

I love goals and endorse them.

However, one of the criticisms of the personal development movement is that it’s a bit self-indulgent and narcissistic.

What can “I” achieve? What can “I” get out of life?  How can “I” feel better about myself?

It’s a fair criticism sometimes.

In recent years, most sports have started to keep track not only of the goal scorers, but of the team-mates who provided them with the chance to score.

It’s called an assist.

Scoring goals is great, but assisting others is just as, if not more important.

Great teams are unselfish and understand that if they help each other to get on the score-sheet, then it will be reciprocated.

Great leaders understand that the focus shouldn’t be upon what they can achieve personally, but about what they can coach and develop others to achieve.

And it’s not that hard to assist those around us.  Here are a few ways that we can do this:

  • Find out what your colleagues are trying to achieve and see if you can help
  • Offer a word of wisdom to someone with less experience
  • Smile, encourage and pray with someone who needs it (hint, everyone needs it)
  • Be a mentor to someone
  • Sponsor a child in the developing world
  • Write a helpful blog in your field of expertise
  • Ask your boss what you can do to take some pressure off them
  • Share books and blogs that you have found helpful
  • Look to meet the needs of others before your own

Zig Ziglar once said, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

Let’s find a way to assist people to achieve their goals.  Perhaps you’ll get some help with yours along the way.
