From this...

It was six years ago today that our first-born son Hayden was born.

I can still remember being in the delivery room, weighing him and giving him his first bath.

It was an amazing time, with a range of emotions experienced from immense joy to an unnerving insecure sense that I had no idea what I was doing.

Since then there have been thousands of nappy changes, sleepless nights, a few trips to the doctor or hospital, learning to crawl, walk and talk, tantrums, time-outs, hugs and kisses galore, twin siblings, play groups, kindergarten and now school.

He’s gone from being a small helpless baby to a great kid who loves soccer and Star Wars and is great fun to be around.

It’s been an amazing ride so far, with moments of almost indescribable joy and pride coupled with incredible frustrations.

As I reflect on the past six years, I’ve come to realise that the time flies.  The vivid memory of those first few days is still fresh, but kids grow up so fast that I can easily lose track of the milestones along the way.

He’ll be ten soon and then a teenager and then he’ll be driving and then moving out of home and then he’ll be a dad himself.

It’s scary how quickly the time passes, so I’m determined to enjoy every moment and to maximise my time with my kids.

As parents, let’s enjoy the journey.  Let the frustrations pass and focus on the magical moments that children give us.

They grow up too fast and we’ll regret it if we don’t.
